The 6'5", 300-pound freshman from White Plains, Maryland, attended St. Mary's Ryken High School in Leonardtown, where he played offensive line under head coach Gary Wynn. As a junior and senior, Tarpley earned first-team All-Washington Catholic Athletic Conference honors and received all-state recognition from the Maryland Independent Schools.
