The Monroe, Louisiana native attended Neville High School, where he earned First-Team Louisiana 4A All-State honors as a junior and was named District 2-4A Defensive Most Valuable Player. A three-star recruit, Whatley was ranked the nation's No. 156 defensive lineman in the composite recruiting rankings and the No. 41 overall player in Louisiana. He did not appear in games during his freshman season in 2025 and returns to the roster as a redshirt freshman.
