At Picayune Memorial, he compiled 2,251 rushing yards and was named the Region 4-6A Player of the Year, helping lead the program to two Mississippi Class 6A State championships. As a junior, he recorded 1,087 rushing yards on 124 carries with 15 touchdowns while averaging 9.2 yards per carry. A three-star prospect, Smith chose the Ragin' Cajuns over offers from Ole Miss, Boston College, and UNLV.
