A native of Jonesboro, Georgia, Owens attended Jonesboro High School for three seasons before transferring to Douglas County High School for his senior year under head coach Johnny White. He earned consensus three-star status from recruiting services, ranking as the No. 72 prospect in Georgia per national outlets and No. 100 by recruiting services. As a junior at Jonesboro, Owens recorded 70 tackles, three interceptions, and two forced fumbles while helping his team reach the Georgia 6A state semifinals.
