He attended Andrew High School, where he was a four-year letterwinner and earned 2024 News-Gazette All-State honors along with 2024 IHSFCA Class 8A All-State Honorable Mention. McDonough received three-star recruitment ratings and ranked #27 among centers by national outlets. During his redshirt freshman season in 2025, he did not appear in a game.
