A native of Rigby, Idaho, VanSteenkiste was named to the recruiting services Idaho 5A All-State First Team in 2021 and helped lead Rigby to the Idaho 5A State Championship in 2019. He maintained a 3.9 GPA at Rigby High School. VanSteenkiste redshirted as a freshman in 2024 and entered the 2025 season as a redshirt sophomore at 5'11" and 195 pounds.
