The Nashville native played at Station Camp High School in Gallatin, Tennessee, where he recorded 229 tackles and 33.0 tackles-for-loss over his career. Ellis spent 2024 at Tennessee State under current BGSU head coach Eddie George, earning OVC Defensive Freshman of the Year honors and Jerry Rice Award finalist status.
