He attended Paducah Tilghman High School, where he led the Tigers to a 15-0 record and the Kentucky 4A State Championship while earning Kentucky Football Coaches Association Player of the Year honors. As a senior, he threw five touchdown passes in the state semifinals, with his third setting a new KHSAA record for career touchdown passes. He entered the championship game with 13,642 passing yards, 180 passing touchdowns, and 1,543 attempts, all state records. James appeared in one game for Troy in 2025, playing three snaps against Old Dominion and being sacked once.
