At Fleming Island High School under coach Tom MacPherson, Cruz played defensive back and running back, recording 114 tackles, 12 pass breakups and five interceptions as a junior. He scored six rushing touchdowns in 2025 and earned all-district honors as a utility player in 2024. Cruz also competed in track and field, capturing FHSAA 3A District 3 championships in the 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash and 4x100 relay, and was named All-First Coast on defense by Jacksonville.com.
