During his freshman year, he appeared in four games late in the season while preserving his redshirt eligibility, recording one reception for 8 yards in his collegiate debut against Minnesota on November 1. At Red Oak High School, Taplin was a three-sport athlete who caught 37 passes for 502 yards and three touchdowns as a senior, while also competing in track and field.
