The Baton Rouge native prepped at Central HS, where he earned consensus three-star status and ranked No. 87 nationally at his position. As a senior, Mays recorded 32.0 tackles, 21.5 tackles for loss, 8.0 sacks, and 10 hurries. During his junior year, he posted 73.0 tackles, 6.0 tackles for loss, six sacks, three pass deflections, and three forced fumbles while also returning an interception for a touchdown. Mays redshirted during the 2025 season after appearing in two games with one snap per contest on the defensive line.
