From Mesa, Arizona, Barney attended Mountain View High School, where he was a consensus 3-star recruit. During his senior year in 2024, he recorded 74 tackles with 10.0 tackles for loss and 1.0 sack, while also rushing 57 times for 327 yards and six touchdowns along with three receiving scores. As a junior, he tallied 145 tackles and 4.0 sacks. Barney made his collegiate debut against SMU as a freshman and returns as a redshirt freshman for the 2026 season.
