The Monroe, Louisiana native attended Neville High School, where he earned First-Team Louisiana 4A All-State honors as a junior and was named District 2-4A Defensive Most Valuable Player. A three-star recruit, Whatley was ranked the nation's No. 156 defensive lineman in the composite recruiting rankings and the No. 41 overall player in Louisiana.
