Matthew Smith is a 6'2", 210-pound linebacker from Durham, North Carolina who joined Northwestern as a three-star prospect in the 2024 recruiting class. He did not appear in games during his first year in 2024 or his redshirt first year in 2025. At Hillside High School, Smith earned DAC-VII All-Conference honors as a sophomore and DAC-VII Defensive Player of the Year as a senior. In eight games his senior season, he recorded 60 tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss, and 1.0 sack, along with one interception and one pass broken up. Smith also competed in track and field and rushes the ball on offense, recording 80 yards on seven carries with one touchdown in his prep career.
