Hayes graduated from St. Charles East High School in 2022 as a three-year starter and team captain, finishing with 3,400 passing yards and 28 touchdowns. He redshirted in 2022, appeared in three games as a freshman in 2023, and played in five contests as a sophomore in 2024, completing 12 of 19 passes for 214 yards and three touchdowns while rushing seven times for 90 yards.
